BANG SERIES PART 1: THE OVAL FACE

Written by Jessica Tellez, Hairstylist at Urban Betty

Bangs. They can be anything from a statement piece, to a nice addition to a cut, and anything in between. In this series, I’ll be going over all the options available for those with different face shapes, cowlicks, as well as the time commitments involved with each style. Let’s see what we come up with!

First up in this series is the oval face. Widely considered to be the most ideal face shape, this shape has the largest option pool for bangs. Here are a few of my favorites.

THE SHORT BANG

Daily Time Commitment:

  • With no cowlicks, it just requires a few minutes of blow-dry time.
  • With cowlicks, it can be harder to style. Make sure to talk this over with your stylist. There’s a solid chance that these would be a no-go.

Hairstylist Commitment:

  • Not the time to flip flop between stylists. You’ll need to find your person and stick with them. Do not attempt to cut your own short bangs at home.

Trips to the Salon:

  • Once every 3-4 weeks, depending on your personal hair-growth time.

THE STRAIGHT BANG

Daily Time Commitment:

  • With no cowlicks, a few minutes of blow-dry time, if needed.
  • With cowlicks, it could be harder to style. Make sure to talk this over with your stylist.

Hairstylist Commitment:

  • Not the time to flip flop between stylists. You’ll need to find your person and stick with them. Do not attempt to cut your own straight bangs at home.

Trips to the Salon:

  • Once every 4-6 weeks, depending on your personal hair-growth time.

THE LONG BANG

Daily Time Commitment:

  • With no cowlicks, a few minutes of blow-dry time, if needed.
  •
  • With cowlicks, they’re easier to style than straight bangs, but I recommend that you still consult with your stylist.

Hairstylist Commitment:

  • Less complicated than the straight bang, it’s not the end of the world if you go to more than one stylist. Do not attempt to cut these bangs at home.

Trips to the Salon:

Once every 6-8 weeks, depending on your personal hair-growth time.

THE WISPY BANG

Daily Time Commitment:

  • With no cowlicks, a few minutes of blow-dry time, if needed.
  • With cowlicks, these are easier to style than long bangs if you keep them wispy AND long.

Hairstylist Commitment:

  • Far less complicated than the straight and long bang, so it’s not imperative that you see the same stylist. Do not attempt to cut your own wispy bangs at home.

Trips to the Salon:

  • These are low maintenance, you can trim wispy bangs whenever you go in for your regular haircuts (anywhere from 8-12 weeks).

THE CURLY BANG

Daily Time Commitment:

  • It should only take a few minutes. Get them wet, put product in, and you’re done.

Hairstylist Commitment:

  • In general with all curly cuts, you should stick with the same stylist.

Trips to the Salon:

  • These bangs are also low maintenance, you can trim curly bangs whenever you go in for your regular haircuts, but it’s possible that you might need to go in between cuts.

THE CURTAIN BANG

Curtain bangs are the newest trend on the scene!

Daily Time Commitment:

  • If you’re unfamiliar with how to style these bangs, it may take you a few times before perfecting your routine with them. Once achieved, you’re really only looking at a few minutes in the morning.
  • These bangs can work with or without cowlicks. Talk to your stylist to get the best recommendations.

Hairstylist Commitment:

  • Keep your person. Not a good time to switch around stylists once you have your go-to person.

Trips to the Salon:

  • Every 6-8 weeks.

NOT SURE IF YOU’RE READY FOR BANGS?

If your hair is long and you’re hesitant to pull the trigger on bangs, you can try methods such as this photo, to “try them on”.

In short, bangs can make or break your cut. Make sure you’re being honest with yourself in terms of commitment and maintenance. Your stylist can help you decide which is appropriate for your lifestyle as well. Next in the series: The round face: do’s and dont’s!
