BANG SERIES PART 3: THE SQUARE FACE
Written by Jessica Tellez, Hairstylist at Urban Betty
Third up in the Bang Series is the square face. This face shape has some of the most beautiful celebrities associated with it. From Kiera Knightly to Rosario Dawson, you’re in good company if this is you! When looking for the appropriate bang, search for bangs that will soften the jawline. It has a tendency to be somewhat masculine if not done well. Here are a few of my favorites:
THE STRAIGHT/SIDE TEXTURED BANG
Daily Time Commitment:
- With no cowlicks, a few minutes of blow-dry time, if needed.
- With cowlicks, it could be harder to style. Make sure to talk this over with your stylist.
Hairstylist Commitment:
- Not the time to flip flop between stylists. You’ll need to find your person and stick with them. Do not attempt to cut your own straight bangs at home.
Trips to the Salon:
- Once every 4-6 weeks, depending on your personal growth time
THE LONG BANG
Daily Time Commitment:
- With no cowlicks, a few minutes of blow-dry time, if needed.
- With cowlicks, easier to style than straight bangs, but I recommend that you still consult with your stylist.
Hairstylist Commitment:
- Less complicated than the textured bang. It’s not the end of the world if you go to more than one stylist. Do not attempt to cut these bangs at home.
Trips to the Salon:
- Once every 6-8 weeks, depending on your personal growth time
THE CURLY BANG
Daily Time Commitment:
- It should only take a few minutes. Get them wet, put product in, and you’re done.
Hairstylist Commitment:
- In general with all curly cuts, you should stick with the same stylist.
Trips to the Salon:
- These bangs are also low maintenance, you can trim curly bangs whenever you go in for your regular haircuts, but it’s possible that you might need to go in between cuts.
For a celebrity example, check out Ciara’s bangs.
THE CURTAIN BANG
Curtain bangs are the newest trend on the scene!
Daily Time Commitment:
- If you’re unfamiliar with how to style these bangs, it may take you a few times before perfecting your routine with them. Once achieved, you’re really only looking at a few minutes in the morning.
- These bangs can work with or without cowlicks. Talk to your stylist to get the best recommendations.
Hairstylist Commitment:
- Keep your person. Not a good time to switch around stylists once you have your go-to person.
Trips to the Salon:
- Every 6-8 weeks
THE DON’T’S FOR SQUARE FACES
Stay away from short structured bangs, wide bangs, too wispy of bangs, blunt bangs, and heavy bangs.
In short, bangs can make or break your cut. Make sure you’re being honest with yourself in terms of time commitment and maintenance. Your stylist can help you decide which is appropriate for your lifestyle, as well. Next in the series: the do’s and don’ts for the heart shaped face!
