Ask a Betty
“Why is my hair frizzy no matter what I do?”
Google: “Your hair is dry.” Also Google: “Your hair has too much oil.”
Cool, cool, very helpful. 🙄
Lucky for you, you’re a part of the Urban Betty fam, which means direct access to a whole crew of beauty pros who know their stuff. No guesswork required. So we asked YOU to ask US. We hit up our Instagram for your burning hair and skin questions, and our Bettys came through with the answers:
“What’s a simple haircare routine you can recommend?”
👉 Always start with a quality shampoo and conditioner (my favorite is Redken Acidic Gloss Concentrate). Double shampoo in the shower: the first wash removes pollution and product buildup, and the second targets scalp oils. Then, condition from roots to ends.
Pro tip: Don’t skip out on your roots here! It keeps your scalp from overproducing oil, so your hair stays fresher longer!
👉 Skip the rough towel-dry, and gently squeeze out the water instead. If you’re feeling fancy, blow-dry your roots to help your wash last (lifted roots mean oil has a harder time taking hold). 👉 Seal it in with a leave-in like Pureology 21 Benefits to protect against sun, heat, and wind. And once fully dry, finish with a few drops of Kérastase Glaze Drops for shine.

“How often should I really be getting my hair cut?”
For most haircuts, we recommend every 12–14 weeks. Waiting longer and you’re looking at more dry, split ends. Your exact timeline depends on your cut, styling routine, heat usage.
Short styles like pixies and bobs typically need a refresh every 6–8 weeks, while longer styles or one-length cuts can usually stretch to 12 weeks.
Pro tip: The more heat you use, the more damage potential for your ends. A good heat protectant is non-negotiable. One of our salon favorites is K18 HeatBounce.

“My scalp is oily but my ends are so dry! What should I do?”
Ah, the classic “combination hair” dilemma… you need a little bit of everything. The key is balancing your scalp while giving your ends the hydration they’re begging for.
Double wash with lukewarm water (hot water strips moisture and triggers more oil production)… Skip daily washing, and use a dry shampoo like K18 AirWash in between. Pro tip: A weekly masque on your ends will help with adding moisture! I like the Kerastase Nutritive Masquintense, but remember to keep it away from your scalp!

“How do I know what my skin type is?”
Try this simple test: Wash your face in the morning with a gentle, non-active cleanser (like the Sorella Orange You Jelly Cleanser), and skip the moisturizer! Then just pay attention. 👀
By the end of the day does your skin still feel tight? You’re probably dry. Does it look shiny? You’re oily. Some zones oily and others feeling dry? That’s combination. Redness or irritation?? You’re probably sensitive.
Pro tip: Us Urban Betty estheticians would love to give you a second opinion to help you figure it out! Book a complimentary facial consult at 38th Street or Round Rock.

“What order do I put my products on?”
Simple rule: protect in the morning, treat at night.
AM: Cleanser →toner (if needed) → antioxidant serum (like Vitamin C), moisturizer → broad-spectrum SPF 30+
I really love Sorella’s Tropical Topical SPF (and don’t forget to reapply every 2 hours if you’re outdoors, swimming, sweating, or sitting by a window).
PM: Oil cleanser/balm → gentle cleanser → serums/treatments → lightweight moisturizer.
My fave that works for so many skin types is the Sorella Blueberry Milk Moisturizer.
Pro tip: If you have a hard time remembering the order, generally you’ll layer from thinnest to thickest.
Skincare isn’t one-size-fits-all! If you have questions, ask your esthetician. We’re here to help you build a routine that works for you.
