In this day and age most women have or have had their hair colored. Here are a few helpful hints to help you achieve the best results before, during, and after your hair color service at Urban Betty Salon.

  • If getting a high lift tint or bleach applied directly to your scalp, do not shampoo hair for at least 24 hours. Natural oils will help protect the scalp and minimize the burning sensation.
  • Please have your...

In the 1950’s, women visited their salon once a week to set their hair in rollers and have a style that would last several days. Those services were focused on neatly rolled sections, hood dryers, time to cool and lots of shellac. I was inspired by this genre after hearing my clients daydream about having someone at home to set their hair in the morning. I fashion my blow-dry class to mimic those classic sets. For now, I have only a few...

Fall is upon us and my clients are ready for a change. When you find yourself inspired to embrace those rich fall hues, keep the following things in mind:

Is your summer ritual really over? Are you still sunbathing and cooling off in the pool? UV rays and chlorine are quick to fade color because they...

As we get older, our hair ages and starts to turn gray. About 70% of my clientele has some gray hair. And no, that doesn’t mean that I’m doing the hair of a bunch of little old ladies all day. Believe it or not, most people notice their first gray hairs in their 30′s and 40′s. Last year was quite the awakening for myself as I noticed more and more gray hairs popping up all around my hairline. Since then, the “every now and then root touch-up”...

How to Use a Deep Waver

My name is Chelle Morrison, I’m the owner of Urban Betty Salon and I’m also a hairstylist. I’m going to be demonstrating how to use a deep waver iron so you can have natural looking beachy waves.

What tools are you using to achieve this look?

The tools I will be using to achieve this look are a deep waver iron, 1 crocodile hair clip for sectioning, and 1 large comb.

What products will you be using or what...

This year for Fashion X Austin, Urban Betty did all of the hair for the annual kickoff event. The theme this year was "decades" and each hairstylist took a model and a decade and rocked out some amazing hair. The event was hosted at Speakeasy and featured Face Kandy for makeup and a multitude of Austin's most talented stylists to create the fashion for each look.

1. The first step to rehydrate your dry winter scalp is to make sure that you are using sulfate free hair products that will keep moisture locked in and also prevent haircolor from fading quickly. An example of one of the best sulfate free shampoos on the market is PureOlogy Hydrate. I recommend this to most of my clients. Another important factor is to inspect the ingredients...

Last year for my honeymoon, I traveled to London and Paris for two weeks. Before going, several people gave me tips on how to style my hair and deal with power adapters and converters. Did I pay attention? No. And guess what? They were right. So hopefully, I can help a few people out there avoid the mistakes that I made and save yourself and your hot tools! Did I mention I ruined a curling iron and a Chi iron? Yep. This story gets a little...

I recently cut my hair to a short pixie cut . Not that I don’t love it short, but I decided to start growing it back out . Growing out a pixie is a lot like growing out bangs, if you have ever been through that frustration. You try to be patient, but all you want to do is cut it all off because it’s so awkward....

Picking a blowdryer can be a confusing and daunting task. With so many dryers to choose from how are you to know which is right for you? Well I’m here to make it easier for you to pick one. Here are a few things you should keep in mind:

Wattage is an important fact to consider. The more watts the more power. I prefer to have high wattage with low EMFs. You get an amazing compromise between having the most power while being kind to your...

I don’t know about you, but winter has been harsh on my hair! All the dry weather and plus the constant change from warm back to cold, did a number on my hair. The weather can cause the hair to become dry, frizzy and unmanageable at times. Here are some things you can do to fix all your winter hair problems.

Number One, come get those split ends snipped off. No need for a lot of length off, maybe just a skimming of the ends is...

Last August I got engaged and one of the first thoughts that immediately came to my mind was “How will I do my hair for the wedding?” Groundbreaking world saving stuff here, I know. However, to most women planning a wedding this is an essential detail. I had just chopped my bangs to eyebrow length that summer and I needed them to be long again by next fall. Of course, I had a New York trip planned and engagement photos coming up soon, so I...

“Color won’t lift color.” This is a phrase that I learned to live by in eight years of working as a hairstylist. This concept can be a tough one for clients to grasp at first.

I can recall my high school days where I experienced several awkward, unfortunate “at home” dye jobs. On one such occasion, I colored my hair with a Nice and Easy ash brown permeant box color. I chose this shade based on the beautiful, tan, bohemian Goddess...

Fashion color have become very popular as of late and I get a lot of questions from my clients about this. So, if your find yourself perusing through Pinterest for Katy Perry’s emerald green or Kelly Osbourne’s muted lavender, there are some things you should be aware of.

Achieving these colors is no easy feat and requires some finesse. Many of the beautiful heads of hair you see online are photo enhanced, or might be colored extensions...

This year Urban Betty participated in the 6th annual Austin Fashion Week. Not only did we hold our own event, we styled hair for the AFW runway, and our owner Chelle Neff, took home an award for Austin Fashion Week Philanthropist of the Year.

I want to share with you some great tips on how to manage dry hair, repair, then protect it. I also want to inform you about things you may not be aware of when purchasing products at your local store.

The first tip to have healthy hair, is to start using a professional shampoo and conditoner. What many people don’t know is that the majority of the store bought brands (ie: Garnier Fructis, Dove, Pantene, Tresemme etc.) have detergent...

Ah, the graduated bob. This haircut exploded on the salon scene and seemed to me, the most requested style since 2007. Depending on your age, you may remember the origins of this short cut from the 1970’s when it was referred to as the wedge or more commonly the Dorothy Hamill. The wedge cut is a classic short hairstyle that became very popular in 1976 when champion figure skater Dorothy Hamill...
